Feeling Alone
I think it can be said that all of us go through times when we feel alone. During COVID many people were not going to work or anywhere for that matter and they felt and in fact were alone. For others the feeling of loneliness can come even when with other people. Sometimes we can be with family and friends yet still feel alone. The truth is we were made to be with others, never alone. God made Adam and said it was not good for him to be alone. God created us to be in relationship with others.
Even more important than just our human relations we were made to be in relation with God. We were created to walk and talk with God as we go through this life. Of all the loneliness’ that one can have being separated from God is by far the worst. We come into this world separated from God by sin. Yet God longs to walk with us and talk with us as a friend. God provided a way to restore the relationship so that we would never be alone.
I think it would be safe to say that most of us know that our sin affects our relationship with God. But did you know that our sin can affect other peoples relationship with God?
“that the LORD spake unto me, saying,”
Deuteronomy 2:17 KJV
Rashi the leading Jewish Middle age Rabbi has this to say on about Deut. 2:17
“But from when the spies were sent forth until now, the word וידבר is not mentioned in this section, but ויאמר, to teach you that during these entire thirty eight years during which the Israelites were lying under God’s censure, the Divine speech was not directed towards him (Moses) in an expression of affection, face to face, and with tranquility of mind”
It seems as if the sin of the people affected the Shepard of the people.
Now I know this is an Old Testament example, but so is Adam and that one still affects us all. Do we then think for one moment that if a church has sin with in the body this does not affect the church.(I Cor. 12:12-27) Would this not then affect the Shepard (Pastor) of that flock? Sin always has consequences (Rom. 6:23) So then, if we have sin in our lives would it not then be logical that it would have consequences not just in our lives but in the lives of those around us.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”
Isaiah 59:2 NIV
In those we should be influencing for good. Could it be that our sin then has affects on our families relationship with God? Do we by our sin damage the closeness with God of others? We know that sin changes us, so why would we think that those changes in us don’t affect people around us? And if it does do you think it affects them for the good? It would not.
“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
Matthew 18:6 NIV
I think it is easy then to draw an obvious conclusion. Sin separated Moses from God and it was the sin of the people.(I Cor. 12) Sin in our lives causes us to walk with a damaged relationship with God and man. Our sin affects those around us and causes them to feel alone. At the same time the sin makes us feel alone. Separated from God and man by sin. Although I am not sure how it works there seems to be an affect of our sin on the relationship of those around us and the Father. We are one body, what affects any part of the body affect the whole. So if we want the body to be well let us start with the part of the body that is ours. The best place I can think of is I John 1:9. Lets get our relationship with God right and this will help our relationship with others. No longer will we feel alone. We will walk face to face with our God. We will walk in the right relationships with those we love. We will know that we are not alone. Our God is the God of restoration, He restores relationships, first with Him then with others. He created us not to be alone but to be in loving relationships forever.
